Survival Is A Mindset

Submitted by: Matthew Zornes

When preparing for the worst case scenario, most people focus on stocking water, food, medicine, fire starters, clothes, gear and gadgets, among other things. They prepare themselves in every way imaginable, but they never stop long enough to prepare themselves mentally. You might have a year’s supply of food and water along with all kinds of solar powered technology, but if you are not prepared to face the end of the world as we know it, if you are not ready to see the system you’ve always relied upon crumble around you, if you are not strong enough to both witness and endure incredible sadness and suffering, you are liable to crack up and will not last in a long-term urban survival situation.

Consider that for thousands of years mankind has survived and thrived on this planet without modern conveniences such as electricity, air conditioning, cheap food, water treatment plants and other niceties. How did they make it without cars and microwaves and showers? They made it by using their cunning. They knew how to look at their situation, face their troubles and overcome them.

Now consider that throughout history, probably more than 99% of people who ever lived had to work from sunup to sundown just so they would be able to eat the next day. They had very little time for fun an hobbies. If the worst happens, you, too, might have very little leisure time, and of course things like television and video games will be unavailable. If spending the majority of your time just trying to live sounds rough, remember that your ancestors were able to do it. How? Determination.

This is where the good news comes in: Every single one of us is a descendant of people who had plenty of cunning and determination to get through the worst of circumstances. These qualities might be dormant in you, but they are there and have been since you were born. You don’t have to be afraid because you are already more capable than you can imagine. When the time comes, you will be able to tap into your inner survivor and stay strong and focused, no matter what.

But it will be much easier if you prepare yourself ahead of time. And the sooner you start training your mind, the better it will respond when the time comes. Here are a couple things you can do:

1. Accept that life is going to be tough. Envision what a long-term urban survival situation might be like in your area. There could be sick and hungry people, rioters and looters, pain and suffering. Your life could be turned upside down, and you will have to face that. However, there’s a difference between accepting this and dwelling on it. You must also…

2. Choose to have a positive attitude. At any moment in your waking existence, you can choose what to think about it. If your thoughts become despondent, you have the ability to stop them in their tracks and turn your mind elsewhere. If the negative thoughts return, do the same thing. Start practicing this now. This doesn’t mean you should be delusional. In fact, sometimes people who are overly positive don’t last as long because they are repeatedly crushed by disappointment. Instead, you have to accept your situation but maintain hope, no matter what.

3. Have something to live for. If society has collapsed all around you and you’re barely surviving, what’s to stop you from giving up? You need to have a purpose greater than yourself. It could be your family and friends, but that’s not enough. If you lost them, why would you keep going? Maybe it’s because they would want you to. Maybe it’s because you want to live long enough to help rebuild your country. Maybe it’s because, if you’re still alive, God must have another purpose for you. Whatever your reasons, they have to be bigger than yourself. If you haven’t already started thinking about those reasons, now is the time to start.
