How To Clean Marble Floors?

By Richard Dinae

Marble flooring brings elegance to your home. Though less expensive than authentic hard wood floors, a marble floor also exudes class and good taste. Marble looks good on the entryways, the living room, the bathroom, or the office. For this reason, more and more people are using marble on their floors. But along its good looks comes a hefty duty of cleaning them and keeping them pristine-looking. This is why it is important to know different ways on how to clean marble floors.

Daily cleaning and upkeep is essential to keep your marble from absorbing stains, cracking, or chipping. It is important to sweep marble floors everyday with a soft-bristled broom to get rid of dust and loose dirt. A vacuum cleaner can also be used to do so. Do not risk scratching the marble’s surface by using a broom with tough bristles. It is a good idea to have a doormat in order for tiny pebbles and dirt to be removed from the soles of your shoes before they scrape on the floor. Better yet, leave your shoes outside or carry them inside. If your guests do not mind, have them walk barefoot or in their socks. You can also line up indoor cloth slippers near your door so that people coming in can walk on your floor with these without damaging the marble.

Once a week, mop your marble floor with soft cloth drenched in warm water. Dry the floor thoroughly as water can leave water spots on a marble surface. Be careful to avoid acidic cleansers as they can damage the marble by corroding it. Opt for water or cleaning substances that are basic (high pH level). Avoid using concentrated solutions as they can be very abrasive. When you are doubtful, always go for the mildest chemicals. There are marble cleansers that can be diluted in water to safely wash off stain and grime. Marble is porous by nature so be cautious of any spillage. Dry the liquid off your floor with a soft, absorbent cloth before it seeps in and cause discoloration or liquid stains.

Water stains and dirt can make marble look dull and unimpressive to say the least. Once a month, polish your floor with sealant to make it shine and to provide added protection from dirt, spills, and grime. The presence of sealant makes wiping away dirt on a marble surface easier. Consult your flooring contractor on which products are best for your marble floors.

If you want a solution to major fixes on your flooring, contact and hire the professional marble contractors to do the job. They have methods, devices, and products that can effectively get rid of very stubborn stains. Among these methods are wet sanding and chemical stripping. Wet sanding is a method for removing scratches and some surface defects for a smooth finish. This involves an orbital sander to rub a paste (consisting of sand paper grits and water) to the defective surface. Chemical stripping, on the other hand, makes use of chemical solutions to shred off mineral build up, rust, and other impurities on the surface for an improved look and smoother result. With constant cleaning and good maintenance, your marble can last you a very long time.
