Digital Luggage Scale _ No more surprises! August 22, 2010

On a recent trip overseas, a colleague had a baggage scale that he used to verify his bag's weight before leaving the hotel en route to the airport. Airlines have this annoying habit of checking your bag at check-in and if it is one pound over, they give you the option of taking something out to avoid excess baggage charges or pay an excess baggage charge. If you choose to take something out to lighten your bag, you have to figure out how much to remove and then to carry it ... in you pocket, briefcase,carry-on, etc. My colleague's scale quickly gave a digital readout that was accurate and easy to read and was exactly the same as the airline's baggage scale when I later checked in.
When I returned from my trip, I Googled the name of the scale and I found it at Amazon. The price was reasonable and I ordered two - one for myself and another for my daughter, a physician who travels and loves gadgets. The scales arrived, work fine, and both myself and my daughter are happy with them. One thing about the Balanzza Digital Scale - it has a very sensitive on/off switch. If it accidently turns on, it will run the unit to exhaustion and it will not be available when it is needed. However, I found that it was very easy to remove one of the miniture batteries that power the unit and place it into the handle/strap. I pop it into the unit when I need it and it has not yet failed and the unit is very accurate and easy to use. Now, no more surprises at baggage check-in!

I love that you can use both hands with this scale to pull up your luggage. I also love that it beeps when it locks in the weight - that way you're not bending over trying to determine the locked in weight. And it was super accurate. It took the stress out of packing. I'm going to buy a few more - it's worth its weight in gold.

This Lewis & Clark Balanzza Digital Luggage Scale is handy to take with you when traveling. It is not very accurate (+ or - 2 to 3 pounds)but still gives you a fair idea how much your luggage weighs. I have used it several times and given the airlines' limit of 50 pounds; I try to limit mine to about 47 or 48 pounds and so far my luggage has not exceeded the 50 pound limit at the airline's scale. Also, I don't know how accurate the airlines' scales are. I would recommend this scale with reservation.

The scale itself seems to work well. But I ended up with the same problem a couple of other reviewers have had - and it has to do with the plastic clasp getting stuck shut.
I actually took the scale with me to the store when I was buying a new piece of luggage because I wanted to compare suitcase weights before purchasing one. So I clasped the scale to a very expensive piece of luggage and weighed it. But, when I went to unclasp it from the suitcase, for the life of me I couldn't get it to unclasp! You'd think such a simple plastic clasping mechanism wouldn't be a problem, but there it was, firmly locked to the $220 suitcase right there in the middle of the store! No matter how much pushing, pulling, squeezing and twisting I did, it would not let go! I tried using my car keys to wedge it open. No luck. A sales clerk eventually heard all the commotion and tried in vain to help me. She even got a screwdriver to see if we could pry it off. Nope. I'm not making this up!
Since I didn't want to cut the strap, I ended up having to purchase the suitcase (with Balanzaa scale firmly in tow), bringing it home, and spending an hour with screwdriver and pliers getting the thing to release itself from the handle of my unwitting suitcase (which I eventually returned to the store and got my $220 back).
I know this all sounds silly, I mean how tricky is it to insert one end of a simple plastic buckle into the other. For Pete's sake it's something we've all done a million times.
Alas, after doing some risky experimenting, I discovered that unless you buckle the clasp perfectly straight into the other end of the clasp, that it will jam and consequently become nearly impossible to pinch the release mechanism that unbuckles the clasp.
So all this to say: the scale itself works fine. It's the 2-cent clasp they used that's the real problem. So buy this unit if you want to, just be very careful in how you clasp the buckle or you'll either end up spending hours prying it loose with a screwdriver, cutting the strap, or leaving the Balanzaa unit dangling from your suitcase as you check it in at the airport.
